IT Services Office
The IT Services Office (ID) offer a wide range of services, support and consulting in the IT area. They support students, employees of the central division and the technology managers of the institutes.
We are responsible for planning and installation, and for ensuring uninterrupted, secure operation of the entire wired and wireless network.
We provide services in the areas of hosting, server maintenance, server virtualization, storage services, authentication infrastructure and groupware. Its areas of responsibility include installation and maintenance of administration software. We also manage and provide support for IT projects and oversees the central PC/Mac pool and teaching rooms.
The Servicedesk team answers IT-related questions and provides information on all of the IT services provided.

Staff
The administrative department is responsible for quality-, process- and risk management and supports the departmental administration in various administrative tasks. The Secretary's Office handles administrative work, in particular that relating to HR and financial matters.
System Services group (SYS)
Group SYS
The System Services group is divided into four teams:
- HPC – high performance computing. The team operates a computing cluster with CPUs and GPUs that can be used by researchers and students at the university for computationally intensive tasks. It also operates a storage service (research storage) where raw and working data from the cluster can be stored.
- Linux: The team operates Linux servers for IT services and ensures reliable, secure, and high-performance operation. It also offers services such as a central Postgres database and other services.
- Virtualization: Machines throughout the university run on a central virtualization platform. It is ensured that the capacity and availability of the service meet the requirements of the users. Operation of a central mail and SMTP gateway to scan and forward outgoing messages.
- Backup: a central backup solution from IBM (Tivoli) is available to all institutes of the university. Data can be backed up or archived at your discretion.
Workplace Services group (WPS)

The Workplace Services (WPS) group supports and advises IT managers in the following areas:
- planning
- procurement
- operation of PC and Mac-based installations.
It also helps with:
- troubleshooting
- introducing new technologies in institutes and departments
- maintaining and updating various central Windows servers.

Services & Support group (HELP)
Group HELP
The Services & Support (HELP) group manages the servicedesk in H6 and the serviceportal.unibe.ch website. It serves as a central point of contact for IT managers, students, and employees of the University of Bern for questions relating to IT services. We also provide technical support for applications with direct customer contact, in particular:

Collaboration & Identity group (CI)
Group CI
The Collaboration & Identity (CI) group is responsible for ensuring communication and collaboration at the University of Bern. It also handles identity and account management, including account security, the provision of authentication mechanisms and systems, and cloud service management and architecture.
This includes:
- Certificate issuance and management
- Telecommunications systems and mobile communications
- Cloud services based on Microsoft Azure, M365, and GitHub
- Campus groupware based on Microsoft Exchange (email, calendar, address directory)
- Campus directory based on Microsoft Active Directory (Campus Account, authentication)
- Identity and access management based on One Identity Manager and the Microsoft Identity Platform

Architecture & Integration group (AI)
Group AI
The Architecture & Integration group consists of Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) and Integration Competency Centre (ICC).
The EAM takes care of the continuous improvement of the enterprise architecture with regard to alignment with business capabilities, business benefits and corporate strategies of the University of Bern. To this end, the team coordinates the maintenance and expansion of the documentation of current and planned architectures and architecture guidelines and supports ICT projects with regard to architecture decisions.
The ICC offers services and develops software solutions in the areas of Enterprise Application Integration, Data Integration and Web Applications, operates these in a microservice architecture with underlying middleware infrastructure. The team accompanies ICT projects in the implementation of integration needs.
Audio/Video Services group (AVS)
Group AVS
The Audio/Video Services group (AVS) offers a wide range of multimedia services, support and consulting.
- The AVS team supports lecturers, students, employees of the central division and their IT managers at the institutes.
- The AVS team is responsible for the planning, installation and trouble-free, secure operation of the vital AV systems and offers multimedia services (e.g. audio & video solutions, streaming, podcast) for the following events at the University of Bern.

Education
Federal VET Diploma in IT system engineering
Since 1999 the IT Services Department (ID) provides training to IT apprentices with a focus in system engineering. A variety of tasks available such as; IT infrastructure, and operating systems administration. Experienced staff provide an ideal environment for a well-founded basic vocational education.
