Legal Basis
The University Ordinance and the study regulations form the legal basis of an extension of your period of study.
Maximum duration of the extension of the period of study per request and reason:

| Employment | 1 to 2 semesters |
| Student representative work | 1 to 2 semesters |
| Illness | 1 semester; if longer, the students should be given leave of absence |
| Accident | 1 semester; if longer, the students should be given leave of absence |
| Childcare | 1 to 2 semesters |
| Pregnancy | 1 semester |
| Study-related internships outside the plan of studies | 1 to 2 semesters, depending on the duration |
| Period of study away from the University of Bern | As long as the period of study lasts |
| Language courses for non-German speakers | 1 semester |
| Military service | 1 to 2 semesters; depending on the duration of the military service |
| Community service | 1 to 2 semesters; depending on the duration of the community service |
| Civil protection | 1 semester |
| Disability | 1 to 2 semesters; depending on the degree of impairment |
