Entry conditions
Travel documents
Various regulations apply for entering Switzerland. A basic distinction is made between citizens of EU and EFTA countries and those of other countries. The State Secretariat for Migration is the responsible authority in Switzerland.
EU/EFTA-nationals
EU/EFTA-nationals benefit from the Agreement for Free Movement of Persons. A visa is not required.
Non-EU/EFTA nationals
In most cases, third-country nationals require a visa and work permit. Before you leave, check with the Swiss representation abroad for the latest entry and visa requirements.
The employing institute is responsible for the work permit. You should therefore consult with your employing institute before taking action.
The processing time for visas and work permits can take 8-12 weeks.
- People completing a sabbatical or with a scholarship from their home university also require a visa with a work permit. Please contact your host institute for further arrangements.
- Third-country nationals with a valid residence permit in a Schengen country benefit from easier entry conditions. Consult with the employing institute and allow sufficient time.
- If you wish to bring your family to Switzerland at the same time, you should discuss this with the employing institute and make sure to apply for a family reunification visa.
The authorities expect the application for visa is made abroad. Therefore, do not enter the country with a tourist visa. Otherwise, you risk being sent back to your home country.
