Access to study and choosing a field of study

Access to studies at the University of Bern is open to all who meet the admission criteria. Nevertheless, there may be visible or invisible barriers for certain groups of people - for example, for people with disabilities or due to social or ethnic origin, mental health or even age. The University of Bern is committed to removing these barriers.

In addition to these general hurdles, certain groups of people may also be excluded from the choice of subjects. For example, choosing a field of study is still influenced by gender. Women interested in Economics, Computer Science and Physics are still the exception. On the other hand, the proportion of men studying Veterinary Medicine or Theatre Studies is just 20 percent. These differences in the distribution of the genders to subjects and disciplines is referred to as horizontal segregation.
