The "European Charter for Researchers" and the "Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers" – "Charter & Code" for short – is an initiative of the European Commission to enhance the attractiveness of research as a profession and to harmonize working conditions for researchers in the European Research Area.

Charter & Code is a set of general principles and requirements that define the roles, responsibilities and entitlements of researchers as well as those of employers and funders. They are aimed at all researchers at every stage of their careers, and cover all areas of research in both the public and private sectors.

The Charter sets out the requirements that are fundamental to successful research activity, education and training, and researchers' future careers. The Code sets out the requirements that should be followed by employers and funders when appointing or recruiting researchers, with particular emphasis on transparency and equal treatment.
