Tools and Work Aids For lecturers

Registration

Please note the registration deadlines.

Courses and performance assessments that have to be evaluated are selected on the basis of the new conceptual framework and each faculty's QM regulations. Courses that were categorized as «insufficient» in the last round of evaluations must be evaluated again in the next round (interim and final evaluation).

All lecturers are free to have their courses and performance assessments evaluated on a voluntary basis. Depending on the faculty or institute, they can either register for evaluation themselves or contact the person responsible for registrations at their faculty/institute.

Planned interim evaluations should be registered using this form (available only until the registration deadline) by the end of the 3rd week of the semester.

Lecturers who would like to have their course evaluated on a voluntary basis can register on their own using the same form, or by contacting the Evaluation Office (lehrevaluation@unibe.ch).

a) Default evaluation at the end of the semester

Course evaluations are registered in KSL. To do this, select the tab "Lecturers" in the "Details" of the course. Under "Course evaluation" you can select individual lecturers or, if applicable, a team evaluation1. You can also choose the preferred language of the survey (German, English, French). As of spring semester 2022 it is no longer possible to choose a method for data collection. All evaluations will be set up as online surveys, regardless of what is specified on KSL.

Lecturers who would like to have their course evaluated on a voluntary basis can register in KSL on their own or contact the Evaluation Office (lehrevaluation@unibe.ch)..

If the same course is listed more than once in KSL (multiple sequence numbers):

  • If they are supposed to be evaluated separately, please register all sequence numbers that are supposed to be evaluated individually.
  • If they are supposed to be combined for evaluation, please register only one sequence number (ideally 0).

b) Special cases

For some courses, evaluations must be processed separately for various reasons. These include:

  • Early evaluations: the evaluation must take place before the default time frame (e.g. block courses taught at the beginning/middle of the semester, lecturers who teach a course only in the first half of the semester)
  • Registration of evaluations or any changes after the registration deadline
  • Difference in the name of the lecturer on the questionnaire or in the report compared to the information in KSL (e.g. if the course is taught by an assistant, but a professor is registered as the main lecturer2 in KSL)
  • Evaluations that are conducted in groups (e.g. group internships)
  • Sending the link/QR code to another person (standard: (main) lecturer2)

In these cases, please email us with your request at lehrevaluation@unibe.ch, including the following information:

  • KSL number of the course
  • Name of the lecturer
  • Faculty and study program

Individual or team evaluation?

There will be 1 survey for each ticked box.

For team evaluations, the questionnaire (and report) will list the names of all lecturers. If there are 4 or more names, they will usually have to be shortened for lack of space. The Evaluation Office sends the link/QR code to the main lecturer2. Normally all listed lecturers receive a copy of the report.

We recommend using team evaluations only if several lecturers are interested in an evaluation and asking students to fill out multiple questionnaires for one course is not reasonable, e.g. if a large number of courses are evaluated in a semester.

2 Main lecturer

If more than one lecturer is registered in KSL for the evaluation and in case of a team evaluation, the (registered) person highest on the list is considered the main lecturer.

Final evaluations with supplementary module(s) should be also registered via KSL. In addition, please fill in the registration form for each course choosing the requested modules. The registration must also be made by the deadline.

More Information on the supplementary modules is to find here.

This information applies only to oral and written performance assessments (exams) which can be evaluated using the standard questionnaire. It does not apply to all other forms of performance assessment or to performance assessments that are evaluated using other instruments.

Step 1: KSL

Oral and written performance assessments to be evaluated in a given semester need to be registered for evaluation in KSL. To do so, please select the tab "Lecturers" in the "Details" of the course. Under "Examination evaluation" you can select (an) individual lecturer(s) or, if applicable, a team evaluation1. The questionnaires are trilingual (German, English, French). Please note that the surveys are only conducted online, even if the "paper" option is selected in KSL.

Lecturers who would like to have their exam evaluated on a voluntary basis can register in KSL on their own or contact the Evaluation Office (lehrevaluation@unibe.ch).

Step 2: Additional information

After the deadline for the registration of evaluations has passed, the responsible persons in the faculties/institutes will be contacted by the Evaluation Office asking for additional information:

  • Where can we find the complete exam participants' e-mail lists (KSL or will they be provided by email)?
  • When will the lists of participants be final? (date)
  • Is this a written or oral assessment?
  • If two examination dates have to be evaluated separately, the two e-mail lists of the students must be sent to the Evaluation Office by e-mail.
  • Any deviations from KSL:
    • A different examination date

    • Difference in the name of the lecturer on the questionnaire or in the report (e.g. if the assistant is responsible for the performance assessment but a professor is responsible for the course).

Individual or team evaluation?

There will be one survey for each ticked box.

For team evaluations, the questionnaire and report will list the names of all lecturers. If there are 5 or more co-lecturers names, they will usually have to be shortened for lack of space and replaced by "et. al". The Evaluation Office sends the information regarding the online evaluation to the main person responsible2. Normally all listed lecturers receive a copy of the report.

We recommend using team evaluations if several lecturers are interested in an evaluation and asking students to fill out multiple questionnaires for one performance assessment is not reasonable, e.g. if a large number of performance assessments are evaluated in a semester.

2 Main person responsible

If more than one lecturer is registered for the evaluation and in case of a team evaluation, the (registered) person highest on the list is considered the main person responsible.
