Monitorings

In addition to the monitoring networks, the “Bern Urban Climate” research group is also involved in monitoring through specific measurement campaigns. These monitoring activities focus on quantifying the microclimatic effects of urban redesign. “Before-and-after” comparisons are used to analyse the impact of a implemented measure. This involves the use of additional measuring stations, as well as in-situ recordings of surface temperature (taken manually or by drone).

Monitoring has already been completed on Rathausgasse (2019/2020), at Waisenhausplatz/Bärenplatz (2019–2022), on Bümplizstrasse (2021–2023), at the Marzili School (2022/2023) and at Rosalia-Wenger-Platz (2021–2023).

Additional monitoring campaigns are currently underway on Optingenstrasse (2025–2027) and at the Dennigkofen school in Ostermundigen (2026–2028). The results of the monitoring were summarised in a report in 2024, together with additional projects by the City of Zurich:BAFU report

A measuring tower has been in use for specific monitoring since summer 2025. This cost-effective tower, developed by Patrick Kallabis, enables measurements at various heights (0.5 to 10 m).
