Monitoring network Bern

High-resolution recording and analysis of the urban heat island in Bern

Since 2018, the Climatology Group has been operating an extensive air temperature monitoring network in the city of Bern. Spaced across various urban structures and surfaces, vegetation types, and topographical and infrastructural features, the sensors are housed within a radiation shield. Homemade, low-cost measuring devices are used for this purpose; these are equipped with a small fan and transmit the collected data via LoRaWAN.

The monitoring network consists of 80 to 100 sites, which are installed throughout the year. The focus of the measurement period is on the summer; any necessary repair work is carried out in the spring. The measuring devices record the current air temperature and relative humidity every 10 minutes.

Since 2021, the project has been supported by the city administration (Stadtgrün and Tiefbauamt) and the municipal energy provider ewb.

The live data is displayed on the Bernometer and can be accessed via BORIS once it has passed quality control. A summary of the results for each summer is published in a factsheet:
