Jazz dance combines the earthy rhythms of African dance culture with the classical movement technique of the western world.

In contrast to modern dance, jazz dance revolves around cross-rhythms and is polycentric in nature, i.e. featuring rhythm isolation of parts of the body. Jazz dance owes its expressive force to the 'swing', rhythmic and dynamic moves, as seen for example in musicals. Warm-up exercises train the dancer's technique as well as coordination, condition and flexibility. The following dance routines then highlight expression and pleasure in dancing.
