FAQ

The global coffee bean market is tense and volatile. Although the extreme price peaks of 2024/2025 have calmed down somewhat, raw material prices are still at a high level.

Yes. ZFV offers its full range of plant-based alternatives at the same price as cow’s milk. Since ZFV promotes efforts to reduce animal protein consumption, it will cover any additional procurement costs incurred from August 1, 2026.

The price adjustments and other measures should help to ensure that the canteens can continue to cover their costs.

The University of Bern Canteen Operations Foundation is responsible for catering at the University of Bern and the Pädagogische Hochschule Bern (PHBern) and commissions the caterers of the ZFV cooperative and Bakery Bakery.

The Board of Trustees reviews the catering concept, the offers and the prices and ensures medium- and long-term strategic planning. This Board is made up of representatives of the student body (SUB), the Intermediate Staff Association (MVUB), the Senate, the Executive Board of the University of Bern and the PHBern. At the caterers’ suggestion, the Board of Trustees approves the contractually agreed prices (menus, tea, coffee and espresso) and submits them to the University Executive Board.

The catering agreement between the caterers and the University of Bern Canteen Operations Foundation provides for profit sharing. If profit is distributed to the University of Bern Canteen Operations Foundation, the money is reinvested in catering projects.

ZFV is committed to sustainable thinking and action and has various measures implemented in its purchasing and operations. One of these is that it purchases coffee with Max Havelaar’s Fairtrade label certification. The “bring your own cup” initiative also promotes the use of reusable cups.

Further information on sustainability can be found at www.zfv.ch/nachhaltigkeit or in the Sustainability Report 2025 (in German).
