MAS in Extended Intelligence

Mathematical Institute

The modular continuing education program Extended Intelligence is designed for graduates of all disciplines who want to significantly expand their skills in data science, machine learning and statistics.

The  Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Extended Intelligence (XI) comprises the three CAS courses Applied Data Science (CAS ADS), Advanced Machine Learning (CAS AML) and Natural Language Processing (CAS NLP). In addition one module and one thesis needs to be completed. Participants learn a wide range of extended intelligence methods and models and apply the acquired skills to a problem from their own practice.

Additonally, the following CAS programs can be credited towards the MAS XI, either instead of the CAS in Applied Data Science (CAS ADS UniBE) or instead of the CAS in Natural Language Processing (CAS NLP UniBE):

  • CAS in Artificial Intelligence for Creative Practices (CAS AICP UniBE ZHdK, 16 ECTS) by the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bern and the Continuing Education Center of the Zurich University of the Arts.
  • CAS in Advanced Statistical Data Science (CAS ASDS UniBE, 16 ECTS) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science of the University of Bern.
  • CAS in  in Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CAS AI-MI UniBE, 15 ECTS) by the School for Translational Medicine and Biomedical Entrepreneurship of the University of Bern.

The study program deepens and extends the knowledge gained in three CAS study programs (CAS Applied Data Science, CAS Advanced Machine Learning and CAS Natural Language Processing). In addition to the learning objectives of the CAS courses, an additional MAS module needs to be attended. By incorporating of what has been learned from the three CAS courses, participants exhibit an expanded interdisciplinarity and increased perspectivity. This enables them to independently carry out a project at the end of the MAS, especially in the area of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The teaching methods are modern and peer-oriented. The level requires own experience and a university degree with some mathematical background. The program is applied in the sense that it focuses on concepts and the use of common Data Science and Machine Learning infrastructures and software tools, not on the theoretical elaboration of mathematics, statistics, and computer science.

Course Competencies: Extended Intelligence

  • Be familiar with various data sources and data types and be able to develop data management plans
  • Be able to describe, extract, and present scientific findings from data by applying statistical methods
  • Be able to process data using machine learning tools and methods
  • Be familiar with best practices for data management, analytics, and science;
  • Be able to analyse and communicate data science challenges and apply a wide range of data science tools and methods;
  • Be able to perform Deep Learning for a variety of tasks;
  • Know an overview of machine learning methods and applications.
  • Apply and train Deep Neural Networks
  • Be familiar with recent methods for Deep Neural Networks
  • Overview current research topics in the field of Deep Neural Networks
  • Be able to argue about the ethics and philosophy of artificial and extended intelligence
  • Carry out a project in the field of Extended Intelligence

Further learning objectives

In addition to these learning objectives, participants will be able to work independently on an an extended intelligence project with current methods of methods of machine learning, and to communicate it at a level
publication-ready level. By incorporating of what they have learned from three CAS courses, they demonstrate an expanded interdisciplinarity and increased perspectivity.

The study program will be conducted in English

In total, the MAS in Extended Intelligence comprises 62 ECTS credits and has a modular structure. It is composed of CAS AML (mandatory) and two additional CAS courses available for election. The achievements also include a MAS module and a MAS thesis.

The MAS XI is composed of:

  • the CAS in Advanced Machine Learning (16 ECTS credits),
  • either the CAS in Applied Data Science (16 ECTS credits) or the CAS Natural Language Processing (16 ECTS credits) or both
  • Either the CAS Applied Data Science or the CAS Natural Language Processing can be replaced with one of the following accredited CAS programs:
    • CAS in Advanced Statistical Data Science (CAS ASDS UniBE, 16 ECTS) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science of the University of Bern.
    • CAS in Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CAS AI-MI UniBE, 15 ECTS) by the School for Translational Medicine and Biomedical Entrepreneurship of the University of Bern.
    • CAS in Artificial Intelligence for Creative Practices (CAS AICP UniBE - ZHdK, 16 ECTS) by the University of Bern and Zurich University of the Arts
  • an MAS module of 2 ECTS credits,
  • an MAS thesis of 12 ECTS credits.

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Extended Intelligence (XI) is offered by the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bern. The individual courses are taught by university lecturers and experienced experts from the field. Usually, these experts also supervise the final theses.
