Facilities Operations and Maintenance

The University of Bern uses an extremely diverse spatial infrastructure spread across around 130 properties. The Canton of Bern, represented by the Office for Buildings and Constructions (AGG), makes these available to the university in the form of state-owned or rented space as required.
The Facilities Operations and Maintenance (BT) department at the University of Bern is responsible for the efficient and economical operation of buildings. BT works closely internally with the Building Development Office, which determines and implements spatial infrastructure requirements and ensures operational project management in construction projects. Externally, BT cooperates with the AGG in the area of maintenance planning and the implementation of the corresponding measures. Within the university organization, BT provides numerous building operation services for university users as “customers.”

Access to buildings and rooms

Controlled access to buildings and rooms is crucial for the safe and smooth running of the university. The Facilities Operations and Maintenance department is responsible for locking systems and electronic access control systems in all state-owned buildings and rented properties used by the university. It has the relevant locking plans and manages the security certificates for the locking systems. It is responsible for planning new systems and for making changes and additions to existing locking systems.

Cleanliness of buildings and surroundings

The Facilities Operations and Maintenance department is responsible for organizing and ensuring the quality of building cleaning at all University of Bern locations. It sets the binding cleaning standards that apply to both external cleaning companies and internal cleaning staff. Cleaning is coordinated on site by the responsible facility services or the respective administrative office.

Defects and technical malfunctions (excluding IT)

Facilities Operations and Maintenance is responsible for the reliable operation of building services and the functionality of the University of Bern's building infrastructure. In the event of malfunctions or defects, Facilities Operations and Maintenance organizes professional repairs and coordinates the necessary measures.

Planning and Construction

The Office for Buildings and Constructions (AGG) represents the Canton of Bern and is responsible for construction projects and maintenance measures on all buildings used by the University of Bern.
The Facilities Operations and Maintenance Departement (BT) is responsible for the operation of the properties and, in this role, acts as an interface between the university institutions and the AGG.  In this role, BT also assesses the maintenance requirements of the infrastructure and coordinates implementation with the AGG. In AGG construction projects, BT represents the interests of facility management.

Central point of contact

The Facilities Operations and Maintenance Departement (BT) serves as the first point of contact for the University of Bern's main telephone number. In addition, BT manages the parking and garage spaces as well as the two central university rental vehicles. The coordination of lecture halls and seminar rooms at the larger locations is handled by the Room Reservation Center.
