Travel Grants

The University of Bern offers travel grants for researchers preparing international research and education projects.

Eligibility: Researchers at the University of Bern with a PhD.
Amount: Generally, a max. of CHF 1,000 per person and trip. A total of CHF 10,000 is available for travel grants for the current year.
Scope: In general, the University of Bern supports the preparation of projects for EU Framework Programmes, COST, or EUREKA. In special cases, travel costs for the preparation of other international projects may be covered.
Use of travel money: Short preparatory trips that are necessary for setting up international research and education projects. Travel for research purposes cannot be financed. Food and accommodation costs cannot be covered.
Required content of the proposal:
  • Travel grants are only for costs that cannot be covered by the project.
  • One person per meeting can be supported.
  • Two applications per project can be submitted.
  • Generally, the cheapest travel alternative should be selected. A 1st-class train ticket (half-fare) is refunded for distances up to 400 km, the price for a weekend flight for distances over 400 km.
  • The application must be submitted at least 5 days before travel begins.
  • The invoice with original receipts should be submitted promptly after completion of travel.


The application can be filled in electronically and returned as an email attachment or by post. The invoice with original receipts can be returned by email or by post.
