Examzone

Learning to program on computers yet taking the exam on paper? To close this gap and to prevent students from using ChatGPT during an exam, the UniBE startup Examzone has developed exam software for bring-your-own-device (BYOD) settings.

Statistician Anja Mühlemann, who also lectures at the University of Bern following her studies, recalls: "The idea for our software arose from a practical problem at a vocational school. The school was already using students' personal devices for final exams. However, conducting the exams was very time-consuming and required technical expertise. By developing a more user-friendly solution, exams could be held in a formal setting throughout the school year, reducing uncertainty for students."

Our main contribution to society is to reduce the discrepancy between modern, digital teaching and traditional exams.

UniBE alumnus Lukas Diener, an experienced computer scientist and former vocational school teacher, is the brains behind the Examzone software. Sebastian Gygax, who studied business administration at the University of Bern, is responsible for project management and marketing, while Anja Mühlemann works as a versatile developer.

No cheating! Just like in a fair game, exam situations must demonstrate actual knowledge and skills.

The team sees it as an advantage that their start-up has local roots rather than focusing on larger centers such as Zurich, as many others do. “Our main contribution to society is to reduce the discrepancy between modern, digital teaching and traditional exams and to create an environment that corresponds to real working processes. At the same time, we are strengthening Bern as a business location by establishing an innovative start-up here,” summarizes Lukas Diener.

Examzone benefited from the entrepreneurial support at the University of Bern: “The Innovation Office really was a big help in the early days,” says Sebastian Gygax. “They helped us identify potential customers and make important connections. Since founding a startup was a new challenge for us, their help with marketing strategies and making presentations was super valuable. We also had the opportunity to participate in the “STAGE UP” program, where we received professional feedback."
