AI language tools in studies

A module on how AI language tools work and the possibilities for using them in academic studies and scientific writing.

 

Many advise a sensible and balanced use of generative artificial intelligence in studies. Not using it at all is just as inadvisable as doing it exclusively. However, finding the golden mean in the use of AI tools is not so easy. This module is designed to help you do so.

  • ... name the effects of intelligent language technologies on teaching and learning in higher education.
  • ... name the limits and challenges of the use of intelligent language technologies.
  • ... justify why AI writing tools do not simply replace human academic work and why academic writing skills still need to be developed.
  • ... elaborate on the possibilities and limitations of the assistance offered by AI tools in academic writing.
  • ... use AI tools in academic writing as an instrument to achieve better products.
  • ... explain how a responsible use of AI tools in scientific writing looks like.
  • ... argue under which conditions the work is considered as independently written despite the use of AI tools.

Expert: The module is based on the online course «Sprachassistenzen als Chance für die Hochschullehre» of the AI-Campus. The content was created by Dr. Aljoscha Burchardt (German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence), Prof. Dr. Christian Spannagel (University of Education Heidelberg) und Dr. Isabella Buck (RheinMain University of Applied Sciences).
Eligibility requirements: Affiliation with a Swiss university
Credit transfer to study program:
The possibility of crediting the module to one's own study program must currently be agreed upon bilaterally with each respective study program.
Authorship: The module is based on the online course «Sprachassistenzen als Chance für die Hochschullehre» of the AI-Campus and was adapted by the Support Center for ICT-Aided Teaching and Research (iLUB) and the Learning and Development Unit with a focus on studies.
Completion: Students receive a confirmation of completion upon successful completion of this module.
