FAQ
What is the "Digitalization Initiative for Teaching" program?
It is a program by the Vice-Rectorate for Teaching aimed at future-proofing the central digital systems for teaching, as well as study and student administration at the University of Bern. Several closely coordinated projects are managed jointly using the HERMES 2022 method.
Why is the program being conducted?
The PASS audit showed that existing systems and processes must be strengthened to meet growing demands for security, usability, accessibility, and sustainability. The program implements these recommendations and aligns the system landscape with the university's strategies up to 2030.
Which projects does the program include?
The program bundles five projects: KSL (Core System for Teaching), Studitracker (Study and student administration), LMS (Learning platform), Tools (Supplementary teaching/learning systems), and Lecture Recording (Digital room infrastructure).
What does the program mean for students?
The goal is to provide stable, user-friendly, and accessible systems for study planning, registrations, the learning platform, and administrative processes. Regular operations will not change abruptly during the term; adjustments will be communicated in good time.
What does the program mean for lecturers and staff?
Teaching and administrative processes are intended to become simpler, more uniform, and more reliable. Affected areas will be involved in the projects via user representatives and continuously informed about the progress.
What will happen to the ILIAS learning platform?
This remains open. In the LMS project, the learning platform will undergo an open-ended evaluation. Based on this, a decision will be made on whether to further develop or replace it. The key factors are requirements for security, usability, accessibility, and support for digital exams.
What will happen to KSL?
The KSL project strengthens the independence and maintainability of the core teaching system, builds internal development expertise, and specifically improves usability. Ongoing operations are guaranteed during implementation.
How long does the program run?
Implementation runs from 2027 to 2031, with program completion scheduled for January 2032.
How are progress updates provided?
Latest information is published via this microsite as well as through the channels of the Vice-Rectorate for Teaching. At project milestones, targeted updates are provided for internal and external stakeholders
Who can I contact if I have questions?
Inquiries can be directed to the program management at the Vice-Rectorate for Teaching (Digital Officer for Teaching) or the respective project leaders (see Tab Program Organization).
