Review of the Dies academicus 2019

At the 185th Dies academicus of the University of Bern eight people were awarded an honorary doctorate and nine people were given academic awards.

In his address, Rector Christian Leumann focused on the promotion of early career researchers. Christine Häsler, member of the Executive Council of Bern and Director of Education, addressed the audience in response to the climate and women's strikes. Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA and alumnus of the University of Bern, spoke about his personal relationship with the University of Bern and the value of education. Stefan Emmenegger, President of the Intermediate Staff Association of the University of Bern (MVUB), drew attention to the challenges of mobility for the intermediate staff.
