Action plan: Equal Opportunities

In its Strategy 2030, the University of Bern states the following principles: The University is committed to promoting equal opportunities and gender equality among university staff, strives to remove barriers to access and promotes the reconciliation of work and care responsibilities. For the university, the diverse perspectives of university members are an essential component of excellence in research, teaching and administration. As a cross-cutting issue, the promotion of equal opportunities is a management task at all levels. Diversity categories besides gender are physical and mental impairment, age, ethnic origin (language, nationality, skin colour, migration experience, religion), social origin and position, sexual orientation and gender identity.

P-7 Diversity, inclusion and equity in higher education development (2021-2024)

swissuniversities has been managing programmes in the area of equal opportunities and diversity for several years. Diversity contributes significantly to the excellence of Swiss research and teaching. The consideration and promotion of equal opportunities and diversity in all its dimensions is therefore a cross-cutting issue that affects all Swiss universities equally. They are committed to ensuring equal opportunities in teaching, research and university organisation.

By means of projects and cooperations, the aim is to structurally anchor all dimensions of equal opportunities and diversity at universities. It promotes the structural anchoring of diversity and inclusion in organisation, teaching, research and development at higher education institutions as well as a cross-university bundling of resources and "know-how". As an important aspect of higher education development, it is important to recognise all dimensions of diversity, actively promote them and use them as a cross-cutting issue.

Universities are supported in fulfilling their statutory equality mandate. In addition to gender equality, the latter also includes the promotion of equal opportunities for people with disabilities, social integration, participation and respect for minorities, as well as measures against direct or indirect discrimination.
