Degree Programs & Courses Doctorate

Principles

The following principles must be observed when applying for a «UniBE Short Travel Grants for (Post)Docs»:

  • Funding is provided for a) field research stays, b) research stays at universities or other research institutions and c) scientific work in libraries, scientific collections, archives, laboratories, etc., abroad. A research stay may include several activities at several different locations but must be completed without interruptions. Participation in summer/winter schools, conferences, and/or scientific methods courses are possible in combination with a research stay but as a rule cannot be applied for as a single activity.
  • The research stay must be commenced six months at the latest after the date the application was approved (exceptions may be considered in justified cases).
  • You have been registered as a doctoral student at the University of Bern for at least six months, or have been employed as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bern (Early Postdoc, Advanced Postdoc, Senior Research Assistant or MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow) or at the Inselspital for at least three months. On completion of the short research stay, you are required to remain registered at the University of Bern as a doctoral student, or employed at the University of Bern (or at the Inselspital) as a postdoctoral researcher for at least another six months.
  • Applicants must be able to plausibly justify - if necessary, in consultation with their first academic supervisor - the funding requirements for the proposed research stay (i.e., justify why no funds are available for the proposed short research stay within the scope of their own funding). An application is only admissible under these conditions.
  • All applicants must have a completed and signed doctoral or postdoctoral agreement. This applies to all applicants without exception.
  • If you are a junior researcher at the postdoctoral level employed at the Inselspital Bern, the degree of employment (80-100%) and Protected Research Time (absolute min. of 50%, with service tasks in the medical and veterinary field min. of 20%) must correspond with the requirements of the University of Bern.
  • Applicants can request funding for travel and accommodation costs and, as the case may be, to cover fees for participation in summer/winter schools, academic conferences, and academic method courses. In exceptional cases, material expenses for consumables needed for research may be approved (no purchase of equipment).
  • You have the support of your first academic supervisor. A letter of support must be included in the application.
