Up to three prizes are awarded once a year for scientific work in the field of biological sciences (focus biology and bio-chemistry). The prize is intended to motivate young talents who have submitted innovative work in the form of a PhD dissertation or an outstanding publication as a Postdoc.

The prize is awarded in memory of the biologist Dr. Lutz O. Zwillenberg, who passed away in December 2011. The University of Bern thanks the prize sponsor, Ms Dr. Celia Zwillenberg, honorary member of the senate of the University of Bern.
