US National Science Foundation

The US National Science Foundation (NSF) funds basic research and education in most research areas except medicine. NSF's mission is to transform the frontiers of science and engineering, to stimulate innovation and to address societal needs through research and education. It also supports national research centers, user facilities, oceanographic vessels and Antarctic research stations.

When funding collaborations between US and Swiss researchers, NSF typically supports the costs of the US team, while Swiss partners usually need to find their own funding. It is however possible for Swiss partners to receive funding if their role in the project is considered essential. Rules for participation are outlined in each call (solicitation).
