Permanent positions

In relation to the number of post-doc positions, there is only a limited number of professorships or other permanent positions, such as lectureships, at Swiss universities. The selection is correspondingly large and candidates need to be in the right place at the right time with the necessary qualifications and network.

As well as full professorships, the University of Bern also awards extraordinary professorships (disposing of fewer facilities), associate professorships (with at least 50% of the appointment fulfilled as a lecturer) and other lectureships which do not confer the official title of professor. Under certain conditions, a so-called titular professorship can be awarded to people who are linked to the university through a (additional) teaching activity or another special commitment, and which expires upon cessation of the activity at the university.
