The "European Charter for Researchers" and the "Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers" – short: "Charter & Code" – is an initiative of the European Commission to improve working conditions for researchers and thereby to further develop the European Research Area.
The recommendations of the Charter are directed at employers (e.g., Universities); they should contribute to improving the conditions necessary for successful research work, the training and continuing education, and the professional career of the researchers. The Code of Conduct includes recommendations for the employer when hiring researchers, with particular emphasis on transparency and equal treatment.
Implementation of Charter & Code
EURAXESS - Researchers in Motion is a unique pan-European initiative delivering information and support services to professional researchers.
Participation at the Program Sciex
Signing the Charter & Code is a prerequisite for participation in the exchange programme with the new EU-member states (Sciex), which is coordinated by Swissuniversities. Researchers from these countries with a Masters or PhD certificate receive funding for a research stay of 6-24 months at a Swiss university. The first calls were published in autumn 2009 and the program was concluded in 2016.
