This water-based activity trains numerous muscle groups while also working the cardiovascular system. In the water the musculoskeletal system of the body is spared hard impacts or other undesirable stresses and strains. Everyone can work as hard as they want depending on their ability level. Hydro-Gym is suitable as a regeneration program following injury as well as a whole-body workout that takes in numerous fitness factors.

Training is held in the learners' pool, where the water is shallow. It is designed to strengthen the muscles through the resistance of the water and is performed with and without equipment. Running exercises are used to train endurance while alternating exercises improve coordination. The training session finishes with a cooldown and stretching.
