Health insurance

In principle, anyone living or working in Switzerland is required to take out a health insurance policy. However, special provisions apply to people who are staying in Switzerland for the purpose of basic or continuing education and training, depending on their situation. 

Exchange students from EU/EFTA countreis who are insured through a statutory health insurance ask their insurance company to issue a European health insurance card. On presenting your European Insurance Card (EHIC) you are entitled to the same treatment in Switzerland as persons who have basic Swiss compulsory insurance.

Students from other countries or students who are insured through a private insurance must apply to be exempted from compulsory health insurance in Switzerland. The Interntional Office provides the relevant form. The Office for Social Insurance checks whether your health insurance is sufficient in Switzerland. If your insurance is not sufficient you will be insured with a Swiss health insurer by the International Office.
